2004F at 20 days is beginning to moult

Seal pups are fed by their mothers for between 17 to 21 days. The milk is very rich and the pups grow very quickly. Pups feed on average every 4 hours for between 10 and 20 minutes. The bond between mother and pup looks very strong but is severed suddenly when the mother mates with the 'beachmaster' male. Pup 2004F was born on 29th November, so should be weaned by 19th December at the latest. Some pups moult before they are weaned but this pup looks likely to keep his white coat until after he is weaned.
