Seal Group Meeting 17 Raising seal issues in the European Commission |
|
Agenda items included |
Our latest meeting took place on 30th August 2006 at the CPR Learning Space. We were delighted to welcome our 33rd new member - Sean, who shares our passion for Grey Seals. Grateful thanks goes to Marie who has raised the issue of seal entanglement, using Nettle's example, on the European Commission's Maritime Affairs website. We continue to explore any possible existing conservation status for the seals at their haul out sites and appreciate the time taken by the Police Wildlife Officer, English Nature staff and Cornwall Wildlife Trust to help clarify this issue. An analysis of our observation and photo ID work between April and July showed that we ID'd 308 seals, 3% of whom are net entangled. Seals were disturbed on 10% of observations.
British Divers Marine Life Rescue have been on call to rescue 2 severely net entangled seals, one on the Scillies and one on Lundy.
If you would like to become an active member of the Cornwall Seal Group, want to come to our next meeting, have any information for us, want to ask us a question about the seals you see or just want to say you support what we are doing, we'd love to hear from you.
