Seal Group Meeting 16

The meeting they missed! : Seal Research

Agenda items included

Our latest meeting took place on 28th June 2006 at the CPR Learning Space.

We were expecting 2 members to miss the meeting, as they were on the Scillies celebrating their wedding anniversary. But, in the late afternoon, British Divers Marine Life Rescue got a call about a Basking Shark caught in pot line off Coverack. A rescue team was scrambled which included several more Seal Group members. Fortunately enough members still made it, to make the meeting worthwhile and we even had a new member, taking our total to 32!

A key part of the meeting was presented by Bex about the types of Seal Research she is leading.

  1. Students walk coastal transects and record any seals observed. They use a 13 point ethogram that best fits the seal's behaviour, as well as the location, date, time and conditions.
  2. Net entanglement and injuries are the focus of other research and the Seal Group's Net Entanglement Reports will feed into this.
  3. The interaction of seals with boats and people is the subject of further research in an attempt to monitor trends
  4. Photo identification of individual seals continues to feed into Seal Group records.

A real highlight of the last few weeks has been the release of 6 rehabilitated seals from the Seal Sanctuary at Gweek. One of these seals, Sting, has since been seen by Seal Group members back in the wild.
