GPS - a couple of miles off course

Seal pups may travel long distances in their first few months, so navigational errors are an occupational hazard for a young seal!

This seal pup caused me to miss the Chelsea V Bayern Munich game this week! Dave Jarvis rang to say the Seal Sanctuary had received a call about a seal pup by the river at Gwithian that 'didn't want to go back into the sea'. After Dan, Phil and I failed to find the pup by the Red River we gave up our search, but Dave received another call to say the seal was still there. From Godrevy, I was able to scan Hayle's famous '3 miles of golden sand' with my telescope and identify 2 possible locations for the seal. Lesley and Phil found the pup just east of the Hayle Estuary. A quick check over by Selina from the Sanctuary showed the seal to be in good health, apart from a few bald patches. Clearly in need of a sleep, we gave the seal some space and encouraged members of the public and their dogs to keep well clear. Several hours later, blue with cold and under cover of darkness we left the beach. We were delighted to find that the seal had moved on by morning. Hopefully to one of the haulouts a couple of miles along the coast! (PS. Chelsea won 4-2!)
