Seal Group join National Beach Clean at Gwithian

This year's Beach Clean was organised by Claire from the National Seal Sanctuary. This beach is one of those used regularly by the Seal Sanctuary for releasing their rehabilitated seals. Seal Group members turned out to help with this annual national event along with around 40 other volunteers. At first glance, the beach looked remarkably clean, there being few large items of rubbish or netting, but closer inspection proved otherwise. In one small patch of shingle, hundreds of items were picked up. The most common things included small pieces of plastic and cut trawl netting. Of the bits of plastic, most were bottle tops of every description, small drinks straws and cotton bud sticks. Particularly well traveled items that were found were lobster pot registration tags from Maine and Cape Cod in the USA, whilst the most amusing was a small plastic Zebra! It was excellent to see so many young volunteers from the local Surf Life Saving Club take part in this event to benefit the marine environment they enjoy so much.

Well done to Claire and Rachel from the Seal Sanctuary who put up a great display and organised the teams of volunteers. A huge 'thank you' to all the volunteers who gave up their Sunday morning to take part in this event!
